AI Compliance Software: What It Is, and How to Evaluate It in 2026

Distinguish AI Act governance tools from AI-assisted legal work, with a Lexis+ AI evaluation example and explicit limits.

AI compliance software can mean tools for documenting EU AI Act obligations or AI used to assist legal and compliance work. These categories solve different problems. Do not infer that a legal AI assistant includes technical-file management, Fundamental Rights Impact Assessments (FRIAs), model monitoring or regulatory submissions.

Separate governance from assistance

For AI governance, assess the system’s intended purpose, your role as provider or deployer, and the applicable duties in Regulation (EU) 2024/1689. Article 6 and Annex III inform high-risk classification; Article 27 applies FRIAs to specified deployers, not automatically to every use of AI. Providers and deployers have different documentation obligations.

For an AI research assistant, test whether an answer cites real, relevant authority in the correct jurisdiction. Open the source and check the version, reasoning and omissions. Ask which content and languages are available, how product changes are communicated, and what the contract says about prompts, uploads and retention. Do not treat a product demonstration as legal classification of your AI estate.

Use the current consolidated law and Commission guidance for application dates and any legislative changes; do not plan solely around a generic calendar.

Illustrative product test: a research answer, not an AI Act file

Ask Lexis+ AI to explain a legal question within its available collection and draft a short internal note. Review every linked citation and record what the assistant cannot answer. The official US product page describes legal research, drafting and analysis; it does not establish an AI Act governance module or Cyprus, Greece or Malta legal coverage. A FRIA or technical file remains a separate legal and governance task.
