MiCA readiness for Maltese VASPs
A current-status review for Malta crypto-asset service firms, distinguishing historic VFA permissions, MiCA duties and verified product support.
Malta’s historic VFA framework should not be confused with current MiCA authorisation. Existing firms must establish which crypto-asset services they provide and their current permission to provide them. This is not a statement that a VFA registration remains valid under MiCA.
Review current status and services
Map activities to MiCA’s definitions and review Article 59 for the applicable route. For an application, check Article 62 and current MFSA instructions. Distinguish service-provider requirements from token-issuer and white paper requirements. Review custody, complaints, conflicts and prudential safeguards where applicable.
Article 143 set the EU maximum transitional end date of 1 July 2026, with earlier national limits possible and authorisation or refusal affecting the position. At the date of this review, do not describe a mid-2026 transition as still open. Confirm current firm status directly.
Maintain a source log separating the EU regulation from Malta’s national procedures and firm-specific correspondence.

Official international product pages do not establish that every MFSA circular is indexed or automatically mapped to the firm’s services.
